And History was made

And History was made

Mirza  Suhaib Ikram

It is well known that in democratic systems, elections change the destinies of countries and it is said that the electoral process has a profound effect on both the politics of the country and the people. But there is also a country on the world map whose election is not only watched by the people there but also by the states and people of the whole world because the power of this country is so much in today’s world that its electoral process affects the entire world. The United States ranks first among all the centers of power in the world today, so every change that comes there affects every country on the world map.
The history of elections in the United States, the most powerful country claiming to be the world’s first democracy, spans more than two hundred years.
The first post-independence election in American history was held on January 7, 1789, in which the first President, George Washington, was elected. Thus began a new and enlightened era in America that continues to this day. With the election of the President, members of Congress were also elected in this election. Since then, this system has remained in place in the United States to this day and has become deeper and stronger with each passing year.
By 2020, there have been a total of 59 elections in the United States. In which the people have elected the head of state for themselves by the power of votes.
After the formation of political parties, the first two-party election was held in 1796. And this system continues to this day.
In addition to the president, elections for the Senate (Aiwaan-e-Baala) and the House of Representatives (Qauami Assembly) in the United States also began in the same year.
The US House of Representatives has 435 voting and 6 non-voting members. Its head is called the Speaker. Its members are elected for a two-year term to represent each state in the House. Members from each state depends on it population. Senate has two members from each state, i.e. a total of 100 members who are elected for six years. Being the upper house, they have many powers such as Treaties, appointment of judges, appointment of cabinet secretary etc.
According to the US Constitution, the President is elected by the Electoral College, which includes electors from each province. There are a total of 538 electoral votes, of which at least 270 are required to become President.
The 2020 election has been the most extraordinary election in American history. Trump, who was on the field for his second term, was joined by Mike Pence as his deputy, while Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were all set to change American history. While Trump was confident of his victory, Biden believed he was going to the White House with the power of the vote.
Joe Biden’s full name is Joseph Robinette Biden. He was born on November 20, 1942, in a lower-middle-class family in Pennsylvania. He joined a law school after earning a degree in political science and worked as a public defender. Biden first became a senator in 1972. Before 2020, Biden ran for President in 1988 and 2008. He served as Barack Obama’s vice president from 2009 to 2016. His first wife and son have died. Ideologically Biden is considered as Moderate Democrat.
Vice President Kamala Harris was born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California. Harris graduated from Howard University with a law degree from the University of California. Kamala Harris is the first woman of color to become a San Francisco District Attorney. One of the main themes of her campaign was opposition to the death penalty. In 2010 and 2014, Kamala was elected Attorney General of California. During her term Harris made several reforms.
It was clear from the heat seen in the election campaign this time that some extraordinary event is going to be recorded on pages of history, but it was not in anyone’s delusion that the counting process would be so stressful that the wheel of world politics will stop.
After the election, with the counting of votes, the whole world was holding their breathe because every coming result was stranger than previous one.
At the end of the first day, Biden led in Nevada and Arizona, and Trump led in Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia.
Trump had won both Texas and Florida .But the election was won or lost by counting one vote, so both sides were eagerly awaiting another day.
The election result shocked not only 350 million Americans but also a large number of the world. The outrageous memes and posts on social media with the news were a testament to the impact of the US election felt in every nooks and corners of the world.
The second day changed a lot in American history and that day seen lot of up and down in the election results.
On that day, Biden took over Trump’s 213 vote with 238 votes, and Trump refused to accept the defeat. At the end of the second day, the results of Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada remained.
Given the circumstances, Biden’s victory in Nevada seemed certain, as well as Biden’s lead in Michigan, Wisconsin and Arizona. But counting of votes in Nevada was very slow. Trump, on the other hand, was leading in Pennsylvania and Georgia.
Tensions soared in the heat of the political arena when Donald Trump sued the three states.
The third, the fourth and the fifth day were in the news all over the world. In the ever-changing situation, the eyes of all the countries of the world were on the United States to see who would runs the world’s largest democracy. But this time the crown will be tilted towards Biden.
Biden’s victories in Michigan and Wisconsin after a hard-fought third day further clarified the nature of this election. In Arizona, Biden continued to advance, as well as in Pennsylvania and Georgia. Biden had taken the lead over Trump and the victory seems to be slipping out of Trump’s hands.
The counting results next day left Trump and his supporters stunned as the gap between Trump and Biden narrowed in Arizona, but Biden’s chances of victory were bright. An even bigger shock came when Biden took over Trump  in Pennsylvania and Georgia and moved closer to the throne.
After millions of votes were counted on the last day and a nerve-wracking contest, the history of the United States changed and after Biden’s victory in Pennsylvania, the United States got its 46th president.
This memorable election added some new chapters to the history of the US presidency, with 78-year-old Joe Biden becoming the oldest president who ran for office twice before, in 1988 and 2008, but both times he was eliminated at early stages.
Kamala Harris has become the first female vice president of the United States, as well as the first black and Indian to reach this position.
In this election, which took place in the peak of the Corona pandemic, the American people still managed to participate in the election for the sake of their future and it was the biggest turnout to date.
A total of 159 million people voted, about two-thirds of the electorate, and turnout record was broken in 32 states as well.
Biden’s 75 million votes and Trump’s 70 million votes, both are the highest ever received by any candidate, with nearly 100 million votes coming from the post. In the last election the number of votes by mail was 46 million.
This election which cost 14 billion was the most expensive election ever.
Trump is the third president since World War II to lose after completing his first term before that it was George W. Bush.
This Election is memorable in American history and will never be forgotten. It was quite difficult, to see a  transition to seemingly soft-spoken and pragmatic man like Biden taking over from  strange behaved Trump. It was an election in which the incumbent president was a candidate and declared his victory before the counting was over and was not willing to accept defeat in any case.  And attack 200 years old electoral process which is a symbol of greatness, by calling his defeat as rigging. And humiliate American society, which advocates traditions and principles, by raising finger on its system and try to disgrace it all over the world.
Regardless of all these questions raised, the fact that millions of American people have voted, indicates that this nation has unshakable faith in its democratic system.
The new White House incumbent has been decided but It remains to be seen whether Trump’s return trip will be dignified or whether it will become a spectacle and a disgrace to the world’s largest human powerhouse.
